The surrounding mountains of Tarrafal offer time for mental relaxation and a great area for hiking.

Tarrafal is the norhternmost district of the island of Santiago with its regional capital Cidade do Tarrafal. The town has about 8,000 inhabitants and the entire district of Tarrafal has about 18’000 inhabitants. Tarrafal is a small fisher town. It extends from the National Park of Serra Malagueta to the east coast and up to the northernmost point of the island.
There are several other settlements in Cape Verde with the same name, notably Tarrafal on the island of São Nicolau and on the island of Santo Antão; however, Tarrafal on the island of Santiago is the largest and most populous.
